Case study

By January 12, 2017 Uncategorized

It’s time for a case study!

This cute boy is Luke! Luke is a 4 1/2 year old boxer who came to visit us a couple weeks ago because he was vomiting, not eating or drinking and lethargic. Luke’s parents found one black rubber glove that had been chewed on. They weren’t sure where this glove came from or if there was another one. His parents were quick to bring him in when they knew something wasn’t right.

We did a barium study on Luke over the course of a couple hours. Barium sulfate is a contrast media that we administer orally to visualize the GI tract. Then we take a series of x-rays to see if there is a blockage. Luke’s x-rays looked pretty suspicious of a blockage in his stomach or small intestine.

Luke was prepped for surgery later that afternoon. Sure enough, there was a black rubber glove in his small intestine. He received IV fluids, pain meds, antibiotics and anti-nausea medication while at the clinic. Luke recovered quickly and was able to go home 2 days later.

We are so happy to hear Luke is doing well at home!
